Eaglehawk Neck is a spectacular part of Tasmania, on the Tasman Peninsula that offers fabulous water scenery including cliff formations towering up to 300 metres above sea level. These cliffs continue underwater and combined with the rich invertebrate life offer the iving enthusiast spectacular diving.

Eaglehawk Neck is located app. 80kms south-east of Hobart on the Arthur Highway.

The geology of the region is primarily dstone, sandstone, dolerite & granite that has, in some areas, been eroded to a very large degree offering huge caves, caverns and passageways.

The wrecks of the “SS Tasman" in 70 metres, “SS Nord” in 40 metres and the “Andre Reboncas” in six metres offer wreck diving for every level of experience.

Giant kelp forests towering from some 30 metres to the surface give the diver the feeling of flying as they glide through the underwater equivalent of rain forests. These forests are home to many of the endemic species that can be found in southeast Tasmania. Expect to see creatures such as sea dragons, hand fish and seals.

In January 1997, National Geographic magazine featured a story by one of the world's best underwater photographers, David Doubilet who stated that Tasmania had some of the best cool temperate diving in the world.

Eaglehawk Neck is a narrow isthmus connecting the Tasman Peninsula to mainland Tasmania. Known by loclas as the Neck, the isthmus itself is app. 400 metres long and under 30 metres wide at its narrowest point. It forms a natural gateway to the peninsula that was utilised by the British in 1830s when a line of dogs were chained to posts across the neck to warn of any convicts attempting to escape the prison settlement at Port Arthur. The area was heavily patrolled by soldiers, and the guards' quarters still remains as a museum. Many attempts were made by prisoners to escape via the neck, including those of famous Tasmania bushranger Martin Cash.

Eaglehawk Neck is a well known local holiday destination. On the eastern side, a beach stretches around Pirates' Bay that is a popular surfing area. In summer the population rises as people visit their holiday homes.
